Vintage Vogue

I don’t work from patterns much, because I’m pretty bad at following directions. I look at a pattern from the 1940s intended for a crepe or other light weight woven fabric and think “that would look great in a stretchy knit.” But I would have needed the smallest size in the original fabric, so switching to something stretchy meant taking it in several inches on every seam. Add to that the difficulty of stitching down a stretchy diamond over heavy gathering, and it ended up being more work than making my own pattern. But it’s fun to see how other people put things together (even when I think my way is better) and I do love this dress, lopsided diamond and all.

The pattern came from the Vogue vintage reproduction series, but it’s been a few years since I made this dress, and they don’t seem to be selling the pattern anymore.
