We went back to Australia for a wedding last week, and I had a lovely time walking around Sydney again. It’s a beautiful city, full of golden sandstone buildings with green copper roofs. It was nice to be back. There just aren’t enough gargoyles in my life right now.

I would never have expected gargoyles in Australia – they’re usually so much older than that country! But they look pretty authentic, don’t they?
It’s true, these are pretty young gargoyles – they’re from the mid 1800s. I think people saw the soft local sandstone and just couldn’t help but carve it.
Are you from Sydney?
No, but I lived there for four years as an undergrad.
